In some cases, the Church Council might wish to approve the project and name the Climate Witness Partners. Though all of the congregations do not need to be CRC, the majority should be.
  1. Support each congregation as it engages in energy stewardship in the period of September 2016 to June 2017 in order to make church buildings more energy efficient, so that the church uses less energy and reduces its greenhouse gas emissions.  The congregations will:
  • Use Portfolio Manager to set up a baseline and track their progress (The Office for Congregations and Small Business of the US EPA is willing to be helpful as congregations use Portfolio Manager).
  • Take concrete steps to make their building more energy efficient.
  • Consider using other sources of energy beside fossil fuels including solar, hydro, wind and geothermal.
  • Encourage and enable individuals in their congregation to make their homes more energy efficient.
  • If they have a score of 75 or more after they make their building more energy efficient, the congregations will consider applying for Energy Star Certification. It is hoped that at least 1 congregation in each region will become Energy Star certified.

  1. Encourage congregations, campus ministries, and specialized ministries to educate its members about the harm caused by climate change. Education resources will be provided to congregations by the Climate Witness Project.
  1. During the 10 month period, ask one person from their region to write an op-ed for a newspaper.  The CWP will help in the placement of the op-ed.
  1. Organize two meetings with a Member of Congress or Parliament. The Climate Witness Partners and others from each congregation will be asked to participate in that meeting.
