Requirements Position Description:
The Project Editor manages various aspects of editorial production for custom editions, from manuscript to bound books, for basic and complex titles. The production-editorial processes involve coordinating many threads (e.g., proofreading and/or copyediting, design, author relations, proof review) on tight, and sometimes conflicting, schedules. Editorial accuracy for these projects is exacting. The project editor maintains the highest level of editorial, production, and design quality of our books; meets schedules; organizes efforts of stakeholders, including authors and freelancers; and controls costs within his/her ability to do so. This position reports to the Custom Program Manager and is based in NY.

Major Responsibilities:

Project Management

• Analyzes and evaluates custom manuscripts to determine content needs (such as proofreading/copyediting and permissions requirements), and design requirements.
Prepares manuscripts for composition.
• Collaborates with production supervisors to create and monitor schedules and make revisions as circumstances require.
• Participates in status meetings with production and custom editorial stakeholders to ensure that editorial and production requirements are understood and carried out on schedule.
• Monitor and communicate progress as needed from announcement of project to warehouse delivery of the completed volume.

*Quality Control
• Manages freelance copyeditors and proofreaders on a project-basis. Coordinates proofreading/copyediting reviews with author and editorial team; reconciles all editorial changes to manuscript and proof.
• Checks and approves all stages of proof, revisions, and final files for editorial accuracy and technical correctness to ensure quality standards are maintained. Reconciles all editorial and production changes/corrections to proofs. Is the final arbiter in executing corrections.
• Reviews all stages of cover preparation from art/copy through final mechanical in order to assure adherence to quality standards.
• Participates in annual editorial refresh of custom databases by managing the production, metadata completion, and ingestion of assigned manuscripts, and the completion of related projects.

*Collaboration with Team
• Manages editorial and author activities.
• Works closely with other in-house staff to ensure the project remains on schedule and on budget.
• Recommends changes to the project to solve specific problems, as circumstances dictate.
• Works closely with authors during production phases. Woks to understand the needs of the instructor and ensures that the instructor’s vision for the custom title is brought to fruition in the finished custom edition. Communicates regularly with the instructor concerning the status of the project and supports the instructor through each phase of the editorial process such as providing instructions for reviewing proofreading/copyediting and page proofs to authors.
• Works closely with production for assigned titles to ensure quality is maintained. Directs compositors with design preferences; monitors correction cycles; maintains composition schedule.

Experience Needed:
• Strong oral and written communication skills.
• Strong organizational skills to manage multiple projects and meet tight deadlines.
• Ability to prioritize, think critically, and problem solve.
• Ready familiarity with book design, composition and page layout, and type specs.
• Ability to direct and adapt to changing technologies and an increasingly electronic workplace. Ability to thrive as a member of a book team.
• Experience working with Adobe InDesign and Acrobat Pro.

Educational Background Required:
• Bachelor’s or Master’s Degree in English or related field preferred.
