The Special Education Teacher is a highly qualified, state certified teacher responsible for delivering specific course content in an on-line environment. Teachers provide instruction, support and guidance, manage the learning process, and focus on students’ individual needs. Teachers monitor student progress through K12’s learning management system, and they work actively with students and learning coaches/parents to advance each child’s learning

AS A Special Education Teacher, YOU WILL ENJOY...

  • Provides focused academic support and instruction to the student on a schedule determined by the Individual Educational Plan (IEP) through phone conferencing, virtual real-time interaction and/or face-to-face support; Provides focused support to all supplemental programs being used by the special needs student to ensure participation and progress;
  • Provides focused support to the parent on accommodations and interventions to promote the attainment of IEP goals through phone conferencing, virtual real-time interaction and/or face-to-face support; Communicates with parents and therapists to ensure that special education students are receiving the appropriate therapies;
  • Collects data and reviews student work to support documentation of IEP goals; Documents all contact with parents, collaborations with general education teachers, and interventions with students;
  • Makes modifications and accommodations to K12 lessons and assessments as specified by the IEP; Develops the student's IEP, meeting all annual review timelines and notification requirements; Ensures the student's IEP is focused on attainment of grade appropriate academic standards as defined by the state;
  • Ensures that all re-evaluations are completed within specific timelines as defined by state agency;
  • Collaborates with general education teachers to ensure full inclusion and success of student in the general education classroom;
  • Collaborates with general education teachers regarding "at-risk" students to support the development and implementation of interventions within the regular classroom; Collaborates on all progress, semester and grade reports;
  • Maintains all required reports as assigned by the Special Education Manager including student progress reports;
  • Ensures that assigned students participate in state achievement testing and receive monitored accommodations as defined by the IEP.

    Supervisory Responsibilities: This position has no formal supervisory responsibilities.

  • Attends all required professional development;
  • Serves as proctors for site-based proctored exams;
  • Participates in the school's self-evaluation programs;
  • Supports the school administration in the enrollment of special education students.

Are you driven by excellence to deliver instruction, support and guidance, manage the learning process, and focus on students' individual needs? If selected, you will participate in a comprehensive new teacher training program for three weeks before the start of school. It is an opportunity to meet colleagues and learn the responsibilities required for delivering curriculum in an online environment. During this training you will also learn how to monitor student progress through K12's learning management system, and to be a partner actively working with students and parents to advance each child's learning.


Minimum Qualifications

  • Minimum six (6) months of student teaching experience
  • Bachelor’s degree
  • Appropriate state certification
  • Meets state’s NCLB’s Highly Qualified Teacher requirements
  • Proficient in MS Excel, Word, and Outlook
  • Strong written/verbal communication skills
  • Ability to travel at least once per month within and between assigned geographic areas to support students, attend regularly scheduled meetings, and participate in school activities, open houses and orientations.
  • Experience working with the proposed age group
  • Experience supporting adults and children in the use of technology
  • Ability to CLEAR required background check(s)
  • An ability to learn new technology tools quickly (e.g., database and web-based tools)

Preferred Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree AND
  • Three (3) years of special education teaching experience
  • Meet requirements for Highly Qualified Teacher (HQT) in Special Education under No Child Left Behind (NCLB) and highly qualified in the areas of instruction (e.g. Math, ELA,)
  • Equivalent combination of education and experience

    Certificates and Licenses: Appropriate state certification for grades 9-12 and highly qualified teacher status in area of instruction.


    • Strong interpersonal skills emphasizing tact, patience and courtesy; ability to establish a professional, effective rapport with students
    • Able to adapt learning plans to meet different needs and learning styles; create an instructional and a class environment favorable to learning and personal growth
    • Communicate effectively both orally and in writing
    • Demonstrates the use of good judgment in decision-making
    • Great organizational and time management skills
    • Customer service orientation
    • Understanding of applicable sections of the State Education Code and other pertinent regulations
    • Willingness and ability to obtain additional licensing as required
    • Proficiency in Microsoft Excel, Word and Outlook as well as Internet research methods and report writing techniques; Utilizes computer software associated with curriculum
    • Ability to travel up to 10% of the time within and between assigned geographic areas to support students; attend regularly scheduled meetings and participate in school activities, open houses and orientations
    • Ability to pass required background check
    • Ability to obtain a Fingerprint Clearance Card (where applicable)


    • Master’s degree in Education or related field
    • Experience with online school environment
    • Experience working with proposed age group
    • Experience supporting adults and children in the use of technology
    • Ability to learn new technologies and tools
    • Experience teaching in both online and in a brick-and-mortar environment
