Summer Academies Director of Residential Life 

POSITION LOCATION:  VERMONT

Located at Saint Michael’s College in Colchester, VT, Middlebury Interactive Languages Summer Academy offers middle and high school students the opportunity to study Arabic, Mandarin Chinese, French, German, or Spanish with skilled language educators in an intensive four week immersion environment.

As one of the leaders of the Summer Residential Academy, the Director of Residential Life, along with the Assistant Director of Residential Life, is responsible for maintaining the safety and wellbeing of students in a structured environment and helps support a residential staff of young adults 

This is a residential position. All employees will be provided room and board. They will have two full days off during the 4-week session. All employees pay for their travel to and from program locations. Transportation from local airport and train station is provided at both the beginning and the end of the program by MIL. Housing is not provided for family members.

As the Summer Academies Director of Residential Life, YOU WILL . . .

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: Reasonable accomodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential duties.

  • Maintain comprehensive knowledge and utilization of the Academy policies and procedures to create a safe, supportive, rewarding environment for students and staff
  • Assume Summer Site Manager’s duties in his/her absence
  • Address student and staff discipline issues utilizing appropriate interventions and strategies in a timely and effective manner in collaboration with the Site Manager and full-time Middlebury Interactive Languages staff
  • Demonstrate refined leadership and management skills in leading daily staff meetings and providing on-going training and support for residential staff
  • Participate in pre-season interviewing and hiring utilizing methods, tools, and process provided while working collaboratively with full-time administrative staff
  • Attend one weekend in-person training session; dates to be determined

Supervisory Responsibilities: Directly supervises 20-25 Full-time Equivalent (FTE) regular employees and/or contractors.  Carries out supervisory responsibilities in accordance with the organization's policies and applicable laws. Responsibilities include interviewing, hiring, and training employees; planning, assigning, and directing work; appraising performance; rewarding and disciplining employees; addressing complaints and resolving problems.

  • Create a supportive, safe, rewarding and fun environment for students and staff by understanding and utilizing the common sense, academy-tested, residential life guidelines, plans and policies
  • Provide efficient and pertinent orientation session for all staff and faculty and specific training for residential staff
  • Create strong link between residential and academic aspects of the Academy.
  • Converse with parents in a professional, tactful manner regarding student issues

Requirements

MINIMUM REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Masters degree in student life, counseling, or equivalent field
  • 2 years’ experience Residential leadership experience with high school students OR
  • Equivalent combination of education and experience

Certificates and Licenses: none required

  • Demonstrates ability to work collaboratively with peers in a transparent work environment
  • Demonstrates high level of energy, enthusiasm, and ability to operate well in a fast-paced, complex immersion environment
  • Possesses excellent communication skills, engages well with others and is articulate and outgoing
  • Microsoft Office (Outlook, Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Project, Visio, etc.); Web proficiency
  • Ability to pass required background check

DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Understands rigors of the position and is willing to be available 24/7
  • Ability to work as part of a team
  • Ability to work well under pressure
  • Possess a valid driver’s license and a good driving record
  • Fluency in a foreign language is a plus
