Located at Saint Michael’s College in Colchester, VT, Middlebury Interactive Languages Summer Academy offers middle and high school students the opportunity to study Arabic, Mandarin Chinese, French, German, or Spanish with skilled language educators in an intensive four week immersion environment.

The Director of Academics is a school leadership position that works in close consultation with full-time administrative staff and Summer Site Manager to implement the Summer Residential Academy Immersion Curriculum, guidelines, and policies. The Director of Academics leads a team of experienced educators and residential staff to create a unique immersion academic program while ensuring that all Academy policies and guidelines are being followed.

The Director of Academics is responsible for overseeing the implementation of the MIL curriculum for his/her Academies along with coaching his/her teams of teachers pre- and during-season to implement the Immersion Curriculum and to monitor both teacher and student performance.

  • Participates in pre-season interviewing and hiring utilizing methods, tools, and process provided while working collaboratively with full-time administrative staff;
  • Maintain comprehensive knowledge and utilization of the Academy policies and procedures to create a safe, supportive, rewarding environment for students and staff;
  • Manages implementation of Academy assessment program;
  • Provide hands-on coaching to teaching staff to implement the Immersion Curriculum;
  • Completes evaluations, reports and other documentation in a timely manner.

Supervisory Responsibilities: Directly supervises 15 - 20 Full-time Equivalent (FTE) regular employees and/or contractors. Carries out supervisory responsibilities in accordance with the organization's policies and applicable laws. Responsibilities include interviewing, hiring, and training employees; planning, assigning, and directing work; appraising performance; rewarding and disciplining employees; addressing complaints and resolving problems.

  • Works in close cooperation with Summer Site Manager and other site administrators to ensure success of all academic aspects of the academy;
  • Works in collaboration with site administrators to solve problems;
  • Communicates professionally and effectively to parents, students and other staff.

  • Five (5) years as a language educator and/or administrator with leadership experience with middle/high school level students OR
  • Equivalent combination of education and experience

  • Ability to work as part of a team
  • Highly refined communication skills – both verbal and written
  • Microsoft Office (Outlook, Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Project, Visio, etc.); Web proficiency.

    • This is a residential position. All employees will be provided room and board. They will have two full days off during the 4-week session. All employees pay for their travel to and from program locations.  Transportation from local airport and train station is provided at both the beginning and the end of the program by MIL. Housing is not provided for family members.
