Summer Academies Assistant Director of Residential Life

POSITION LOCATION:  VERMONT

Located at Saint Michael’s College in Colchester, VT, Middlebury Interactive Languages Summer Academy offers middle and high school students the opportunity to study Arabic, Mandarin Chinese, French, German, or Spanish with skilled language educators in an intensive four week immersion environment.

As an administrator of the Residential Academy, the Assistant Director of Residential Life (ADRL) is responsible for the support of the wellbeing of students in a structured environment and coaching a residential staff of young adults.  

This is a residential position. All employees will be provided room and board. They will have two full days off during the 4-week session. All employees pay for their travel to and from program locations. Transportation from local airport and train station is provided at both the beginning and the end of the program by MIL. Housing is not provided for family members.

As the Summer Academies Assistant Director of Residential Life, YOU WILL . . .

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: Reasonable accomodations may be made to enable individualswith disabilities to perform the essential duties.

  • Maintain a comprehensive knowledge and utilization of the Academy policies and procedures to create a safe, supportive, rewarding environment for students and staff
  • Provide confidential support for students and staff who may be having difficulty adjusting to the demands of the Academy
  • Assist Director of Residential Life in addressing student and staff discipline issues (as well as health and wellbeing matters) utilizing appropriate interventions and strategies in a timely and effective manner in collaboration with the Site Manager and full-time MIL staff
  • Maintain close working relationship with health center staff and serve as a resource for health related issues they encounter
  • Assume Director of Residential Life’s duties in his/her absence

Supervisory Responsibilities: This position has no formal supervisory responsibilities.

  • Create a supportive, safe, rewarding and fun environment for students and staff by understanding and utilizing the common sense, academy-tested, residential life guidelines, plans and policies
  • Assist with Activities program in collaboration with the Language Directors and Activity Coordinator
  • Assist with leading daily residential staff meetings and providing on-going training and support for residential staff
  • Create strong link between residential and academic aspects of the Academy
  • Converse with parents in a professional, tactful manner regarding student issues
  • Participate in daily meeting with other administrators

Requirements

MINIMUM REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Leadership experience, preferable in an educational or summer program setting or boarding school
  • Counseling degree and clinical work with adolescents is preferred OR
  • Equivalent combination of education and experience

  • Demonstrates ability to work collaboratively with peers in a transparent work environment
  • Demonstrates high level of energy, enthusiasm, and ability to operate well in a fast-paced, complex immersion environment
  • Possesses excellent communication skills, engages well with others and is articulate and outgoing
  • Microsoft Office (Outlook, Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Project, Visio, etc.); Web proficiency
  • Ability to pass required background check

  • Understands rigors of the position and is willing to be available 24/7
  • Ability to work as part of a team
  • Ability to work well under pressure
  • Fluency in a foreign language is a plus
