CATEGORY MANAGER

REPORTS TO:
Senior Category Manager

GENERAL POSITION DESCRIPTION:
Category Management position to manage assigned categories within an assigned team with major responsibilities in achieving both financial and department goals.
PRIMARY FUNCTIONS:
1. Management of the budgeted allowances and margin within assigned categories.
2. Identifying emerging trends, brands, and items within the assigned categories through lifestyle research, industry publications, supplier meetings, trade shows, and market data.
3. Managing the ad planning execution to include sales, margin, income, category coverage for all sales programs including RPM, seasonal, merchandising selling events, food show, and TPR programs within the assigned categories.
4. Manage the new and disc Item process to include an exit plan for all disc item inventory.
5. Manage inventory on slow movers, disc items, items with zero movement and develop plans for minimizing each.
6. Cost negotiations
7. Development and communication of reporting on category item performance trends in markets we operate with regular updates.
8. Plan-o-gram development and recommendations for our retailers based on results from Nielsen and knowledge of their categories, competitive visits, and vendor resources. All pog reflect changes/trends in category
9. Retailer communication – new items, special buys, disc items, pog updates, market trends by category, follow through and managing the company’s expectations of each.
10. Identify and educate the value of specialty foods, natural, organic, health/wellness, nutritional and ethnic food initiatives into the workflow and overall sales goals.
11. Develop the relationship with procurement to achieve overall company sales and profitability with respect to inventory and service levels.

EXPERIENCE NEEDED:
1. High school diploma (college level preferred)
2. Working knowledge in the category management processes in relation to assortment, shelf planning, and category planning.
3. Retail store experience preferred

KNOWLEDGE NEEDED:
1. Managing item assortment, promotions, sales, income and profitability within assigned categories and developing a long term plan to achieve the budgeted results in each area.
2. Knowledge in interpreting and working with Nielsen and other market data applications
3. Product knowledge and sales trends are necessary
4. Knowledge of and ability to manage a P&L.
5. Ability to achieve results, develop goals and manage expectations of established goals.
6. Negotiation skills and interaction with suppliers and brokers
7. Advanced Excel and Word experience.

3. Manage and train one or more people to attain department results and productivity.
