Requirements
Position Description:

This is a full-time Assistant Editor position for Tor Nightfire, a new horror imprint; responsibilities will be fairly evenly divided between acting as assistant to the imprint’s Senior Editor and building the Assistant Editor’s own list of projects. The ideal candidate will have experience as an editorial assistant, a sincere interest in working in horror fiction, and the ability to assess the publish ability of submissions as well as some editing and copywriting experience.

Major Responsibilities:

• Maintaining publication schedules and departmental databases, and otherwise tracking the publication process for anywhere between 20 and 40 titles per year
• Communicating with authors and agents throughout the publication process, as well as acting as an interdepartmental liaison
• Logging agented submissions, sending rejection letters, drafting contract and check requests, generating sales reports, and tracking payments and invoices.
• Writing account-facing and consumer-facing copy, including online copy, catalog copy, and jacket/cover copy.
• Evaluating manuscripts and writing reader’s reports as requested. Assessing publish ability of projects.
• Acquisition of titles, including building and maintaining relationships with agents and authors, soliciting submissions, completing financial projections, and making acquisitions, with support and guidance from senior staff.
• Carrying out developmental editing and line-editing as needed, with support from senior staff
• Work cooperatively with sales, marketing, promotion, and publicity departments
• Development of cover concepts; working in concert with the art department/cover designers and with guidance from senior staff
• Basic administrative support, including schedule coordination, travel, and expense reports
• Staying on top of changes to in-house policies and procedures; taking necessary training; reminding the senior editor of approaching deadlines

Required Skills / Knowledge:

• Excellent organizational skills, strong attention to detail, and exceptional time management Strong ability to multitask and to both set and meet deadlines reliably
• Genuine interest in and knowledge of horror as a genre, both contemporary and in the past, including marginalized writers and works, and in all forms—books, film/tv, audio/podcast, comics, etc.
• Strong communication skills, both verbal and written
• Ability to think creatively and critically, particularly in collaborative environments
• Dependability, punctuality, ability to set priorities and to set and meet self-imposed deadlines

Experience Needed:

• 1-2 years as an editorial assistant or equivalent
• Some experience with expository writing/publication of articles a plus

Educational Background Required:

• High school diploma or GED
