Requirements The Managing Editor (ME) represents Hayden-McNeil/Macmillan Learning Curriculum Solutions to our authors, and principally defines their experience as our client/customer. The ME's primary mission is to produce and deliver the highest quality product and exceptional customer service to our authors in a manner that provides an excellent customer experience that results in developing healthy and deep author relationships.

Duties and Responsibilities:

• Develops and manages author relationships on behalf of Hayden-McNeil/Macmillan Learning Curriculum Solutions; acting as primary contact for project design, production, pricing, and customer service. Concurrently executes appropriate strategy for each project, in consultation with Macmillan Learning Sales and other internal stakeholders.
• Manages numerous author projects by coordinating production activities (for both print and digital formats) inclusive of design and typesetting, profit/loss analysis, printing and binding, shipping, and digital delivery; as well as overall scheduling of in-house and outside resources.
• Identifies and notifies internal stakeholders and Macmillan Learning Sales about any author/project concerns, and works with the same group to achieve appropriate resolutions.
• Evaluates production processes to identify inefficiencies (both in real time and during post-season evaluations), offers solutions, and incorporates changes as necessary.
• Serves as the team’s liaison with all other functional areas of Hayden-McNeil/ Macmillan Learning Curriculum Solutions, including Sales, Content Services, Finance, Production, Manufacturing, Marketing and Customer Service.

Knowledge, Skills and Other Requirements:

• Well-developed organizational skills and attention to detail.
• Ability to communicate effectively, including excellent interpersonal and negotiation skills.
• Strong customer service ethic.
• Responsible for taking the initiative and working independently.
• Ability to apply professional/diplomatic skills in high-stress situations.
• Understanding of production concepts: typesetting, illustration, prepress preparation, printing, binding and shipping.
• Ability to apply critical and analytical thinking to projects.
• Builds successful relationship management strategies with both internal and external customers throughout production process, resulting in attainment of targeted team goals.
• Strong database skills; i.e., Microsoft Navision, Access, or comparable program.
• Some travel required throughout the year. Travel is dedicated to author visits, and will occur approximately 4-5 times/year.

Qualifications:

• Bachelor’s degree required.
• Experience in publishing, college textbook sales or customer service helpful.
• Project management experience, preferably management of multiple complex projects.
• Some experience in digital publishing preferred, but not required.
