Requirements The Platform Development group builds and manages internal and external products to support Macmillan’s strategy of data-informed decision making and streamlined business processes. These products are based on modern data science and engineering technologies and practices and include web applications, data aggregation, data stores, data analyses and access via reports and APIs. We deliver these products and data services with speed, quality, and delightful customer service by using agile and DevOps cloud automation practices.

Position Description & Responsibilities:
The Director of Application Development is a hands-on role leading the development and operations of all of our internal and external products. Hands-on centers on leading the Django/Python backend development including data modeling, REST API design, and various data, service, and systems integrations. The technical leadership includes the software engineering architecture and design of our products spanning frontend (React.js), backend (Django/Celery), DevOps (Travis CI, Ansible, Datadog, AWS), and integrations with other services, systems, and data stores. Management starts by working very closely daily with Product Management & UX Design on priorities, managing expectations, and collaborating on product features, issues, and solutions. It continues by helping define sprint goals and managing team commitments, supporting and helping evolve our agile and DevOps practices and competencies, 24/7 application monitoring, product operations and technical support (in collaboration with our Data Engineering team), project resourcing and priorities, people management of software engineers including mentorship and recruiting, and engaging with the other Platform Development management team members, data scientists, and others across Macmillan to ensure strong communications, coordination, teamwork, and customer support. This position is located in our NYC headquarters.

Requirements:
• Very strong Python / Django / Celery / DRF development expertise - able to mentor others
• 10+ years software engineering experience
• Exceptional English communication skills - written and verbal
• Positive attitude, provides regular constructive feedback and coaching
• Contribute to our culture of engineering excellence and continuous improvement
• Has technically led small development teams by example
• Experience managing remote developers and QA testers
• Effectively coordinate with product managers, UX designers, frontend & backend engineers
• Successfully launched & evolved single page applications (SPAs) using React.js or other
• Extensive SQL and ORM experience
• Linux (e.g., Ubuntu) admin-level knowledge
• Continuous Integration (CI) and other automated testing experiences
• DevOps and cloud IaaS (e.g., AWS) experience
• Application and system monitoring with team on-call experience
• Exceptional diagnostic skills
• Proven ability to smartly balance speed-to-market, quality, and risk
• Agile project management embracing customer-focus, user feedback, transparency, and responsiveness
• Other technologies a plus - e.g., Flask, modern JavaScript, Ansible, Selenium, HTML5/CSS, Nginx, Git/GitHub, Redis, PostgreSQL, VirtualBox, Docker, serverless, Travis CI, Slack Bots
