We provide industry and competitor insights and support the advance of major transformational and growth initiatives.

Key areas of focus include:

• Strategic Planning: Understand Holtzbrinck’s portfolio & product offerings and business performance to support core planning activities and strategic initiatives.

• Industry & Competitor Intelligence: Deeply understand industries/markets and key players in relation to our business goals today and tomorrow.

• Strategic Initiatives: Support transformational projects and initiatives sponsored by portfolio companies that deliver significant value. Work with leaders across the business to create a unified, long-term vision for our businesses.
Requirements

 

Position Description:

The Analyst will play an integral role in supporting key strategic priorities for Macmillan and Holtzbrinck Group (its parent company) and in turn projects driven by the Group Strategy and M&A team in collaboration with and on behalf of its portfolio of divisions, companies, and ventures primarily in the consumer content and education markets.  Reporting to the Senior Vice President of Group Strategy and M&A for Macmillan, the Analyst will be responsible for gathering market intelligence and analysis, supporting the development of the investment/acquisition pipeline and assessment of specific opportunities, providing support for strategic planning processes across the portfolio, and preparing of discussion materials and updates for the Macmillan’s board.

Major Responsibilities:

  • Market Monitoring: Track, analyze, synthesize and report on general marketplace trends, competitive developments, emerging companies, new opportunities and threats to Macmillan’s businesses (via news sources, secondary research, team gathered intel, data analysis, conference attendance, etc.).
    • Tasks in this area can include (but are not limited to) creation of a regular market update for the executive management team, development of deep dive case studies (e.g., detailing relevant market trends, start-ups), and coordinating the collection of intel/data from the team.
  • M&A Support: Help identify and screen potential investment/acquisition opportunities; Help conduct analysis and diligence on specific investment/acquisition opportunities (i.e. new markets companies, products, business models) and support completion of transactions and integration of the assets into the portfolio. 
    • Tasks in this area can include (but are not limited to) market sizing and forecasting, competitive analysis, company contact and screening, maintenance of investment target database, review of company supplied data (i.e. financial, product, technology legal, HR, etc.), market and business modeling, investment brief and case development, coordination of team diligence, and assistance managing integration plan.
  • Strategic Support: Provide support for corporate, division, unit level strategic/business planning.
    • Tasks in this area can include (but are not limited to) specific analyses as needed, creation of discussion documents for planning sessions/workshops, and support in documenting strategic plans.
  • Business Development: Support evaluation and implementation of strategic partnerships; and exploration and experimentation with innovative new business models and growth initiatives
    • Tasks in this area can include (but are not limited) to modeling potential new business opportunities and scenarios, development of business cases/plans, and tracking progress of new business initiatives being executed

Required Skills / Knowledge:

  • Strong analytical acumen
  • Solid interpersonal, oral and written communication skills
  • Entrepreneurial spirit
  • Must be highly organized and work quickly
  • Easily handle and adapt to numerous and shifting priorities
  • Must be a power user in Microsoft Excel and PowerPoint applications and comfortable utilizing databases (or large unstructured datasets)
  • Strong qualitative and quantitative research skills
  • Must be able to work through vast amounts of information/data; and construe patterns to surface business insights
  • Must be adept at synthesis and visualization of information/data (whether presentations, models, etc.)
  • Must be highly collaborative and a team player
  • Must have client centric orientation (with high comfort collaborating with and/or presenting to external/internal clients)
  • Experience in publishing, education technology, digital media is a plus

Experience Needed:

  • Minimum of 3 years experience as an analyst in a management consultancy, investment bank or corporate development department for large company
  • Candidate must have a strong quantitative background (ideally actual experience constructing financial/business/market models) and able to quickly analyze large amounts of quantitative and qualitative data, and clearly summarize & present findings from data analyses to an executive management audience

Educational Background Required:

  • Bachelor’s or Master’s Degree in Business Administration or other related field or equivalent work experience.
