Requirements Macmillan Learning is looking for a highly skilled individual to sell course materials - textbooks and educational technology products - to professors at two and four-year colleges and universities in Iowa. The current opening requires overnight travel (35%).

The Publisher’s Representative is responsible for maximizing the sales of Macmillan Learning’s products by driving the usage of Macmillan resources, including textbooks and online resources (LaunchPad, Sapling Learning, Achieve Read & Practice, and iClicker) through on campus visits and interviews. A publisher’s rep must be comfortable in their ability to work independently while also being a part of a larger team.

MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES:

• Travel to schools in the territory for the purpose of conducting in-person interviews
• Achieve sales goal by maintaining existing business and winning new business
• Use Salesforce.com to manage business potential, document daily sales activities, and forecast sales in the territory
• Drive strategy and key business decisions in your territory
• Conduct consultative sales calls and offer customer centric solutions based on the entire suite of Macmillan products
• Develop and maintain a high level of knowledge about Macmillan’s products and services
• Effectively manage your time, territory, and resources to maximize sales results
• Challenge customers’ assumptions and expectations providing valuable insight in market perspective
• Be an active team player both on the sales team and throughout Macmillan to help meet company objectives
• Interact and communicate effectively with colleagues in sales, marketing, editorial and external customers
• Manage operational expenses

Required Skills / Knowledge:

• Ability to work independently and remotely as well as part of a sales team
• Excellent communication skills and the ability to thrive in a self-starting environment
• A knowledge of and/or an interest in working in an academic environment
• Proficiency with computers and basic applications software
• Valid driver’s license
• Ability to travel overnight approximately 40% during peak season (January-June and September-November)

Experience Needed:

Direct sales experience
Experience working independently or remotely
Strong analytical skills

Physical Requirements/Job Attributes:

Requires periods of close concentration, must be able to multi-task, must lift 35 lbs. of books on sales calls, must be able to walk up to 2-3 miles a day on campus, must be able to concentrate in noisy/busy environment, and must be able to travel, including ability to drive for periods from 2 to 5 hours, and fly for internal meetings. A valid driver’s license is required with daily travel within territory and frequent over-night trips. Attendance at national sales meetings and regional meetings is required (4 or more days at a time). During the fall and spring selling seasons it is necessary to work more than 40 hours per week. During these seasons it is necessary to spend all day on campus and then complete follow up in Salesforce.com, sampling, and expense reports in the evening
