Requirements Lab instructors turn to Macmillan Learning/Hayden-McNeil for custom lab solutions. Increasingly there is interest in more advanced digital lab solutions to solve more complex problems for lab instructors and enhance the student lab experience, including pre-lab, in-lab and post-lab instruction and assessment, as well as building solutions to bridge lecture and lab courses. As a member of the custom labs team, the Lab Solutions Specialist (LSS) plays an important role in executing on our vision and roadmap in these ways:

• Media & Content Development: how we combine, use, and render new and existing lab content, materials and assessment in new feature sets and platforms, conforming to new standards for authoring and accessibility
• Custom Lab Course Design: collaborate with internal teams and with customers as needed to consult on instructional design and support
• Project Management: Oversee large scale projects to prepare us for the systems we are building for

The Lab Solutions Specialist (LSS) is an excellent and detail-oriented project manager, able to manage large projects and relationships independently. The LSS is also able continually improve and grow digital lab solutions for our customers. The LSS is a great communicator, collaborating effectively across various teams, externally with instructors and users, and cross-functionally with product development, sales, marketing, and technology to develop, implement, and troubleshoot new types of custom digital lab resources/tools as well as develop new and complex lab content. The LSS has solid technical skills and understanding of how to solve problems in an online course environment in order to enhance the customer experience.

Responsibilities:

Media and content development for online labs:
The LSS works to merge various content types such as simulations, assessment, text, photos, video, formulas, lab manual content, and interactive media to create user engagement and meet lab course objectives. The LSS has familiarity with authoring tools, calculated questions types, accessibility standards, and more. LSS collaborates with Custom and Product colleagues to ensure error-free implementation of content. The LSS will work across multiple systems, software and all ML lab product lines to design customized course solutions. They must have strong technical skills and ability in HTML, CSS, ePUB3, graphing software to seamlessly adapt individual customer needs to complex customized courses.

Custom Lab Course Design:
Leveraging their subject matter expertise and experience in a lab environment, the LSS consults with internal and external customers to determine how to structure digital lab course solutions, blending content needs with online course features and functionality to meet course objectives. The LSS develops and creates end-to-end lab solutions for instructors, incorporating pre-lab, in-lab, post lab, and lab manual experiences, while also considering course administration needs such as TA training and blending a lab and lecture solution. The LSS customizes content and features to meet learning outcomes. The LSS monitors and tracks course usage and reports on metrics about student engagement and outcomes.

Project Management:
As we plan the future of our lab solutions the LSS will oversee the execution of several key project initiatives including content creation and conversion to new formats (assessment questions, simulations, virtual labs, and lab data activities) and redefinition of requirements to support vision to build new digital lab experiences for instructors and students, and migration planning for existing/new customers to new solutions/platforms. This requires oversight and accountability for engaging and managing vendor and contractor relationships and delivering on milestone dates and results, along with budget tracking and reporting/communication of project status.

Skills/Experience

Required

-M.S. or Ph.D. in corresponding field (Chemistry, Biology, or Physics) required
-Technical skills: HTML, CSS, ePUB3, graphing software, authoring tools, assessment engines
-Excellent interpersonal and communication skills – written, verbal, remotely, and in-person
-Experience working as a Lab instructor or Lab TA (Gen and/or Org Chem, Physics)
-Understanding of the principles of instructional design and building lab curriculum
-Strong computer savvy and the ability to learn new systems quickly; familiarity with mobile apps
-Demonstrated ability to work within a collaborative, fast-paced environment
-Strong organizational and multitasking skills with attention to detail and commitment to providing exceptional solutions and service
-Experience with university learning management systems along with accessibility, integration, and inclusive access requirements
-Demonstrates passion for solving problems and applies critical thinking skills to innovate and develop meaningful lab experiences and outcomes
-Commitment to contributing
- A passion for STEM lab education and be able to bring custom, instructional design and support to lab instructors.

-Previous experience using online teaching tools preferred
-Experience in wire-framing and gathering market/instructor feedback
