Macmillan Learning has an exciting opportunity for a new Director of Communications serving the higher education and AP high school markets. In this dynamic, multi-faceted role, the Director will be responsible for the development and implementation
of a strategic, creative and innovative communications plan across multiple channels, including the promotion of our educational strategy, mission and vision internally and externally. With a strong focus on brand management, the Director will manage corporate
public relations, support strategic organizational objectives, drive thought leadership in support of executive initiatives, and develop and execute our corporate social media presence and owned media content across channels to consistently articulate Macmillan
Learning’s mission and objectives.
As a leader in the organization, the Director will work closely with executive management and act as communications partner on strategic initiatives, especially with leaders in Marketing, Sales, Content, Product, Technology, Customer Experience,
Finance, Human Resources, and Learning Science. The Director will be responsible for navigating or guiding internal initiatives to support the culture of the company. Externally, The Director will work with various partners including authors, press, partner
companies, associations legislators, etc. The Director also may work on various legislative or public affairs.
The Director should have an understanding of the higher education marketplace and shifting customer preferences as well as news in the related fields of impact such as educational technology, politics, and research. Ideally, candidates will have
had previous success promoting content and ideas, in managing crisis communications, and in public relations.
Reports to: Vice President, Communications & Training.
Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
Direct and execute the strategic communications and media plan focused on Macmillan Learning’s brand, position, and message in the education market
Act as liaison to press, media contact for all educational and external media outlets; generate necessary press releases, posts, alerts, executive summaries and other external documents while determining additionally creative, newer, or more targeted
strategies to deliver our message
Serve as a spokesperson for Macmillan Learning on a broad range of subjects
Continuously engage with senior executives on industry news, trends, and opportunities while proactively working to increase awareness of ML in the marketplace (including executive visibility and thought leadership opportunities).
Develop high-quality written and promotional materials that communicates Macmillan Learning’s corporate narrative and mission, including print/electronic communications, messaging platforms, releases, blog posts, speeches, presentations, articles,
Town Halls, etc.
Serve as Communications advisor to senior leaders in the organization and provide support in all internal/external meetings
Support internal communications and activities in partnership with the Learning & Development and Human Resources teams.
Promote a culture of collaboration, engagement, performance and continuous improvement that champions learning and a commitment to quality
Organize or participate in various activities across teams to ensure clarity of internal issues, challenges, dynamics and opportunities and create plans or initiatives to provide solutions
Establish new programs or initiatives to support ML reaching financial targets
Develop and maintain program to effectively analyze and measure impact and reach of Communication activities
Actively participate at semi-annual Macmillan Learning management, sales meetings and regional sales meetings.
Required Skills / Knowledge:
Bachelor’s Degree required
At least 5 years’ experience in public relations, media, or applicable marketing experience
Experience within the Educational Technology, Education, or Publishing Industry preferred
Excellent writing, communication, and presentation skills
PC or Mac proficient
Proficient with graphic design software
Skilled at collaborating with senior executives, vendors, authors, educational leaders and fellow staff members
Acute attention to detail
Self-starter with an ability to work in a fast-paced, results-driven environment and handle multiple projects at once
Proven ability to meet deadlines with consistently strong results
