Requirements
Position Description:

Henry Holt is looking for an experienced Executive Editor to acquire, edit, and see adult nonfiction and fiction books through to publication. This editor will work on multiples titles per season and have strong relationships in the agent community. They will work closely with publicity, marketing, and sales to ensure successful publication of their titles and collaborate with other editors to generate book ideas in-house. The editor will have a dynamic editorial sense and broad knowledge the adult publishing landscape.

Major Responsibilities:

• Acquisition of multiple titles per year that contribute to and help strategically balance Holt’s growing list.
• Building and maintaining relationships with agents and authors, soliciting submissions, and completing financial projections.
• Developmental editing and line-editing of acquired projects, as well as generating book ideas and commissioning writers for them.
• Development of cover concepts; working in concert with the art department/cover designers.
• Writing or overseeing the writing of both account- and consumer-facing copy, including online copy and jacket/cover copy; providing key material for sales reps.
• Working cooperatively with sales, marketing, promotion, and publicity departments; and supervising and mentoring staff.

Required Skills / Knowledge:

• Extensive knowledge of the adult book market and publishing landscape, and of writers, comp titles, the news cycle, cultural trends, and other content-driven industries such as TV and podcasts.
• Strong communication skills, both verbal and written.
• Ability to quickly assess the publishing viability of a submission or project idea.
• Understanding of packaging and publishing strategy to successfully break out titles in a crowded marketplace.
• Ability to analyze sales figures and projections and the costs associated with acquisitions.

Experience Needed:

• Minimum six years editing and acquiring adult titles at a trade publisher.
