Requirements
Position Description:

First Second Books is looking for a talented and energetic Design Assistant to join our team. The ideal candidate should be excited about book design and eager to learn the process of publishing high-quality graphic novels. First Second publishes approximately 40–50 graphic novels per year across all categories and age groups: fiction and nonfiction; children’s, young adult, and adult.

Major Responsibilities:

The candidate is a quick learner able to meet the following expectations:
• Assist with assembling files for covers and interior book pages while following and/or maintaining house guidelines for both print and digital editions.
• Work with and monitor freelance designers workflow and route incoming materials on a regular and timely basis.
• Collaborate and liaise effectively with creators, editors, and production and other in-house departments.
• Work with other in-house departments to ensure materials requests are met in a timely and effective manner.
• Prepare files and approve proofs and other progress materials.
• Make manual and digital art and lettering corrections as required.
• Archive and organize files as directed.
• Participate in group creative discussions.

Required Skills / Knowledge:

Collaborative, versatile, and creative design professional with:
• Understanding of comic book techniques and conventions and knowledge of current trends in the graphic novel field.
• Exhibit outstanding design skills. Portfolio should show excellent use of typography, image composition, and color.
• Should possess strong verbal and written communication skills and be able to cultivate relationships with internal and external parties.
• Must have outstanding organizational skills and work very well in a team environment while being able to perform duties independently.
• Ability to manage multiple projects and work quickly without sacrificing quality in a deadline-driven environment.

Experience Needed:

• Internship and/or 1–2 years graphic design experience.

Educational Background Required:

• Bachelor’s Degree in Graphic Design, Illustration, and/or Art. Bachelor’s Degrees in Liberal Arts, or other major may be considered with comparable work experience in graphic design specifically.
